One Sunday afternoon (March 16) we set out to enjoy the Windward side of Oahu . Our destination was The Makapuu Point Light. Besides the lighthouse and awesome views – you can see humpback whales from the trail. NO sighting luck for us.
The Makapuu Point Light on the island of Oahu has the largest lens of any lighthouse in the United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
There are some fantastic views as you drive along the coastline.
Now, on to the trail up to Makapuu Lighthouse!!
While David was on the phone with our son, Bryan – I took a few pictures….
At the top of the trail are some steps and caged in landing. There are padlocks attached to the chain link fence – many of them with names and dates. ” These are called “Love Locks” – padlocks affixed to a fence, gate, bridge or similar public fixture by sweethearts to symbolize their everlasting love – a phenomenon that apparently started in Europe in the early-2000s.” Ho‘okuleana While we there – a couple was taking a long time and we were waiting – then I noticed they kept taking pictures of themselves and her hand – and then I noticed the blinking diamond on her hand! I wonder if they just got engaged?! Apparently this is a popular spot to get engaged.
Loved the hike/walk and views.
