Compacflt Boathouse and Pearl Harbor ~~~~~ 10 April 2014

by admin on April 13, 2014

On our last day in Hawaii we went to see Pearl  Harbor.  Some wonderful friends arranged for us to join them on a special boat tour.  We arrived in the morning – it was a cool and cloudy.  We were greeted by two Navy officers that gave  us a very respectful and informative tour.  We started at The Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet (COMPACFLT) Boathouse – built in 1953.  And this is quite a famous spot – where the top Navy leaders visit and many President’s of the U.S.

This is the Admiral’s Barge.  It is in perfect, spit spot condition.

Then we toured a small museum with memorial models of ships and historical pictures of the attack on Pearl Harbor and other WWII Images.  We also viewed the documentary video about the attack and aftermath of Pearl Harbor.

Then we went on a wonderful boat tour around Ford Island. We saw the USS Utah Memorial and the spot where the USS Nevada ran aground.  Then we floated by the “Mighty Mo” or USS Missouri and then on to the famous, USS Arizona Memorial.  We were given about 10 minutes to view the memorial.  It is quite amazing to see in person – there is a respectful and honorable feeling there.  The USS Arizona sank within 9 minutes – trapping thousands of men underwater.

Spot where the USS Nevada ran aground – the only ship that was able to get away during the attack.

USS Utah – Capsized during the attack.

“The USS Arizona Memorial, located at Pearl Harbor in HonoluluHawaii, marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed on the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 by Japanese imperial forces and commemorates the events of that day.”  Wikipedia
