Appliance Maintenance

by admin on March 5, 2010

Okay let’s be honest we can not survive life without our major appliances working! I have been suffering with a slowly dying refrigerator since Christmas Eve.  I called the appliance repair company to come and take a look at our old fridge.  The appliance repairman came in with all is glory – you know what I mean they “know everything.”  He quickly told me the old fridge is not worth fixing.  Well I was just thrilled – I just wasted $50 bucks for that announcement.  BUT he kindly taught me some great appliance repair maintenance tips.

So here are some Major appliance Maintenance Tips:

  • Dishwasher MaintenanceCascade Dry Powder dishwasher soap is the best to use in Utah with our hard water because it has the highest fosfate level to help the soap dissolve.  I was using capsules – but the repairman said I was losing 15 minutes of washing time because they don’t dissolve well.  It’s true those little buggers were just barely dissolving after fifteen minutes of washing – I checked!  Use Jet Dry to help with cleaning of your glassware – you get cleaner glasses and less etching.  Another tip the repairman shared was to purchase a large bottle at Costco instead of a small one.  You get more for your money and Costco had a coupon for Jet Dry last month!
  • Washing Machine Maintenance – It is all in the load size and weight! Do not wash rugs or large blankets/comforters.  Not even Bath Rugs!  (I am guilty of this.)  Also limit your load size – Don’t over-stuff your machine.  Just wash 6 pairs of jeans not 12!!  I have an old Maytag washer and dryer set that was left in the home we purchased over 4 years ago.  The repairman told me to keep them – the older models were made well and will last a long time.
  • Refrigerator Maintenance – Recommended type of Refrigerator – Whirlpool. The friendly repairmen said that Whirlpool has a better  condenser and when they repair other refrigerators they put in Whirlpool condensers – Interesting.  Also Clean your Coils! Clean them once a year and if you have pets clean them twice a year.  This is the best thing you can do to maintain the life of your fridge.  You can look at an old post about my experience cleaning refrigerator coils.

So here is the short story about my new, wonderful fridge.  As you know the style and color of our appliances is all the new thing!  Well my kitchen is behind the times and the appliances are all white.  I started looking at sale adds and stores for prices of a new fridge.  My husband suggested getting a used fridge.  I said no way!  But I humbled myself and began to look at the KSL classifieds online and thought maybe we could find a newer used fridge.  It seems like everyone was changing out their appliances for black or silver.  No one wants a White Refrigerator anymore. Well BINGO!  This week I saw an add for a fridge only 6 months old for $600.  It was a White side-by-side Whirlpool.  Just what I was looking for!

We had quite the adventure getting the fridge out this a sweet lady’s home, but we did it.  I had the help of my son, Jonathan and his friend and my niece, Stacy.  She has a fun truck and was willing to drive to Draper and haul if back to our house.  Then we had four young men attempt to to lift it up the front steps of our home.  But they made a quick call for their leader next door to come bring some muscle power.  So all was well and the fridge found a new home!  Oh!  And I got the fridge for $550!

The joys of a new, clean functioning refrigerator!!

Good-bye old friend!
